On Thursday afternoon, we will go on an excursion to the nearby mountain Schauinsland. The name literally means “look into the land”, referring to the spectacular panorama of Freiburg, the Upper Rhine Valley, the Black Forest (in the east), the Alps (in the south) and the French Vosges (in the west).
We will ascend the mountain by means of the Schauinslandbahn, Germany’s longest circulating cable car (“Umlaufseilbahn”). Each cabin takes around 22min to reach the top of the mountain. (For those who prefer it, our bus will also drive up the mountain.) After we have arrived at the top and taken in the view, we’ll head on a short hike (around 90min), passing by several historical sites.
Around 17:30h, we will board the bus to go back to Freiburg. If you want to hike some more, you also have the option to join a group that will hike down the mountain and back to Freiburg (around 10km to the tram station).
Though we are hoping for good weather, please make sure to bring solid shoes and rain protection. If you are considering hiking back to Freiburg, it might also be a good idea to take a small snack and a water bottle.
